Akios S-Line 656 CTM GRX

At Gerrys Fishing, we consider the Akios S-Line 656 CTM to be the undisputed flagship of the S-Line family. This is the reel that set the standard for modern multiplier performance, blending the built-like-a-tank reliability of classic reels with high-tech casting innovations. The CTM is an open-cage powerhouse, stripped of a level-wind to provide the spool with total freedom and the angler with direct thumb contactthe essential setup for those looking to hit the horizon.

What makes the 656 CTM GRX truly special is its dual braking system. It features internal centrifugal blocks for consistent safety and an external Long Mag Knobby for precision on-the-fly adjustment. Whether you are a novice looking for an overrun-free experience or a seasoned pro tuning the reel mid-cast to account for a changing wind, this reel gives you total authority over your spool speed. With its machined aluminium spool and precision-cut brass gears, it delivers a silky-smooth 5.3:1 retrieve that makes winching through the surf feel effortless.

Precision Casting & Control

The open cage design is a deliberate choice for the dedicated caster. By removing the level-wind, Akios has eliminated the friction and mechanical drag that can kill a long-distance cast. The ABEC 5 stainless steel bearings allow the spool to reach incredible RPMs, while the knobby magnetic slider allows you to tame the beast as the lead reaches its apex. Finished in the stealthy GRX livery with lightweight anodized side plates, this reel looks just as good as it performs.

Examples of Where to Use

  • Long-Distance Surf Fishing: Specifically engineered for open beach marks where reaching distant gullies and sandbars is the difference between a blank and a bag-up.

  • Casting Competitions: A popular out-of-the-box choice for club-level casting competitions due to its highly tunable magnetic braking system.

  • Targeting Specimen Rays & Hounds: The 17.5lb carbon drag and high-torque brass gears provide the winching power needed to stop powerful summer species in their tracks.

  • Clean to Mixed Ground: The open cage and high-speed bearings make it a joy to use on sandy beaches or shingle banks where fast gear recovery is a priority.

Gerrys Pro Tip

The 656 CTM is a tuners dream. To get the absolute maximum distance, start your session with the Knobby Mag turned about three-quarters of the way On. As the oil in the bearings warms up and you find your casting rhythm, start backing the mag off by one or two clicks per cast. Youll feel the reel loosen up and your lead will carry significantly further. Also, because this is an open-cage reel, make sure you practice your thumbing on the retrievelay the line evenly back and forth to ensure your next cast is as smooth as the first!

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this reel have a level-wind?

No. The CTM is an open-cage (CT) model. This is designed for maximum casting distance as it removes the friction caused by a level-wind mechanism. If you prefer a reel that lays the line for you, look at the Akios 656 CSM models.

Is it difficult for a beginner to use?

Actually, the CTM is one of the best reels to learn on. Because it has dual braking (centrifugal and magnetic), you can set it up to be incredibly safe. As your confidence grows, you can reduce the braking to increase your distance. It grows with you as an angler.

How do I maintain the magnetic system?

The Long Mag Knobby is a robust mechanical system, but it likes to stay clean. After a salty session, give the external knob a wipe with a damp cloth. Occasionally, remove the side plate and put a tiny drop of light oil on the slider threads to ensure the magnetic carriage moves smoothly back and forth.

Can I use braid on the 656 CTM?

Yes, you can, but we recommend caution. Because it is an open-cage reel, braid can sometimes dig in under pressure if not laid perfectly by hand during the retrieve. Most of our customers at Gerrys prefer a high-quality 15lb to 20lb monofilament for this specific model to get the most consistent casting performance.
