Akios Shuttle 651STR KURO Left Hand

At Gerrys Fishing, we know that left-handed anglers (the Southpaws of the shore) are often forced to compromise when it comes to high-performance multipliers. The Akios Shuttle 651STR KURO is the answer to that problema premium, left-hand wind casting machine that doesnt just match its right-handed siblings but exceeds them in raw durability.

The STR (Stainless Tough Reel) designation is the core of this beast. Unlike the standard Shuttle, the KURO version is equipped with extra-tough 5.3:1 stainless steel gears, providing the structural integrity needed to winch heavy fish and leads through the surf without the gears binding under pressure. To offset the weight of these beefy internals, Akios has fitted lightweight anodized aluminium side plates, reducing the overall weight by approximately 100g compared to standard brass-plate models. This results in a reel that is incredibly strong yet wont unbalance your high-modulus carbon rod.

Stealth Performance & Control

Wrapped in a stealth black finish with striking gold accents, the 651STR KURO features a one-piece, low-profile solid aluminium cage. This cage provides a rigid foundation that eliminates the frame flex often found in multi-part reels. For the distance seeker, the free-floating spool system (supported by two integrated ABEC 5 stainless steel bearings) allows for effortless, high-velocity casts.

Control is managed via a dual braking system: internal centrifugal blocks for the start of the cast and an external long knobby magnetic slider for precision in-cast adjustments. This allows you to dial in the braking as the lead slows down, maximizing every yard of your cast.

Examples of Where to Use

• Long-Distance Beach Casting: The 651STR is a born and bred casting reel. The free-floating spool and knobby mag control make it perfect for reaching distant sandbars.

• Rough Ground & Mixed Marks: Thanks to the stainless steel gears, this reel has the grunt required to winch leads and fish through kelp and over rocky ledges where brass gears might struggle.

• Southpaw Competition Fishing: For the left-handed match angler, this is the gold standard for reliability and speed during high-intensity sessions.

• Uptiding from the Boat: Its robust construction and level-wind-free design make it a stealthy choice for casting away from the boat in shallow to medium depths.

Gerrys Pro Tip

For all my left-handed casters out there, the 651STR KURO is a precision instrument. To get the best out of that long-knobby mag control, start your session with the mag set to about 75% On. As you find your rhythm and the spool bearings warm up, click it back one notch at a time. Also, because this reel features a one-piece aluminium cage, make sure you give the seams where the side plates meet the cage a quick wipe with a silicone cloth after a session. This prevents salt from creeping into the tight tolerances of that beautiful black finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this reel strictly for left-handed people?

Yes, the 651 model is a Left-Hand Wind reel (you hold the rod in your right hand and wind with your left). If you are right-handed and prefer to wind with your right hand, you would need the 656 model.

What is the benefit of Stainless Steel gears over Brass?

Stainless steel is significantly harder and more durable than brass. While brass is smooth, stainless steel can handle much higher torque and winching pressure over a longer period without the gear teeth wearing down or stripping under extreme load.

How often should I clean the ABEC 5 bearings?

For the best casting performance, we recommend a light drop of high-speed reel oil every 3-4 sessions. If you notice a drop in distance or a change in the sound of the reel during the cast, its time to flush the bearings with a degreaser and re-oil them.

Does the black finish scratch easily?

The KURO finish is a high-grade anodization, which is much tougher than standard paint. It is highly resistant to salt corrosion and minor scratches, but like all premium gear, it should be stored in a padded reel case (like the Akios Sea Trek Reel Case) when not in use to maintain that stealthy look.
