Okuma Azaki-55: Robust Performance for the Everyman Angler

At Gerrys Fishing, we often recommend the Okuma Azaki-55 to anglers who need a large-capacity, high-torque reel without the high-torque price tag. The Azaki series is built around the concept of simplicity and durability, utilizing Okumas latest body design which features sleek lines and a rugged corrosion-resistant graphite body.

The Azaki-55 is a significant step up in size within the range, moving from the smaller finesse models to a reel capable of handling much heavier work. With its 14kg Max Dragdriven by Japanese oiled felt drag washersit provides surprising stopping power for a reel in its class. Whether you are fishing off a pier, a beach, or a boat, the Azaki-55 offers the reliability needed to land the fish of a lifetime.

Technical Specifications

The Azaki-55 is built for strength and capacity, featuring a lower gear ratio for increased cranking power:

Reliability-Focused Features

• Japanese Oiled Felt Drag: This multi-disc system provides a smooth release of line, which is crucial when a large fish makes a sudden run. The oil keeps the washers supple and prevents the drag from sticking.

• RESII: Rotor Equalizing System: This second-generation computer-balanced system ensures the rotor spins without vibration, even during a fast retrieve, providing better line lay and a smoother feel.

• Infinite Anti-Reverse: The Quick-set system ensures there is zero back-play in the handle. When you strike, the hookset is instantaneous and solid.

• Precision Machine-Cut Brass Pinion: Unlike some budget reels that use plastic or inferior alloys, the Azaki features a brass pinion gear for improved durability and a longer lifespan under pressure.

Where to Use the Azaki-55

The 55 size is a versatile mid-to-large reel, perfect for several UK angling styles:

• Heavy Estuary & Pier Fishing: If you are targeting Bass, Mullet, or Flatfish from a pier or estuary mouth, the Azaki-55 has the line capacity and drag to handle strong currents and hard-fighting fish.

• Light Surf Casting: For those using shorter 10ft or 11ft beach casters on clean ground, this reel provides an excellent balance and enough winch to bring your gear through the waves.

• General Boat Fishing: A great budget-friendly option for light boat work, such as feathering for Mackerel or bottom fishing for Bream and Gurnard.

• Pike & Carp Fishing: In freshwater, the Azaki-55 is a fantastic choice for dead-baiting for Pike or as a budget-friendly Carp reel where you need a large line reservoir and a strong drag.

Gerrys Pro Tip: The 4.5:1 gear ratio on the Azaki-55 is specifically designed to give you more mechanical advantage. If you find yourself fishing in weedy or snaggy areas, this lower ratio makes it much easier to bully a fish away from cover compared to a high-speed lure reel.
